Minnesota may be known as the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” but in reality, the state boasts an impressive 11,842 lakes. Minnesotans take that number to heart, with lakeside living and cabin getaways woven deeply into the state’s culture.

Ask anyone who’s sat in bumper-to-bumper traffic heading north from the Twin Cities on a Friday afternoon—they’ll tell you that cabin life is practically a rite of summer. Whether it’s a rustic family cabin passed down through generations or a favorite rented spot, “the lake” holds a special meaning for many. It’s less about a specific destination and more about the feeling of escape: sunshine sparkling on the water, the sound of loons calling across the bay, and the timeless rhythm of swimming, boating, and late-night bonfires.

While there are many well-known destinations in Northern Minnesota—like Duluth, Brainerd, or the Boundary Waters—the most treasured places often aren’t marked on a map. They’re the familiar docks, quiet shorelines, and simple traditions that make “up north” feel like home
